Slime Rancher 2

A colourful first-person ranching game in which you collect slimes with a vacuum pack, feed them and build up a conservatory on Rainbow Island. It is bright and good-natured, though some slimes and weather can knock your health down, so it is not entirely combat-free.

Bouncy slimes in a glass conservatory

Ranching slimes on Rainbow Island

Slime Rancher 2 continues the story of Beatrix LeBeau, who travels to Rainbow Island, a land of ancient technology, unknown resources and, as the developer puts it, an avalanche of wiggling, jiggling slimes.

You hoover up slimes with a vacpack, take them home to pens in a glass-walled conservatory and feed them. Slimes produce plorts, which you sell for newbucks to upgrade your vacpack, build gadgets and expand your ranch.

New slime types include the bouncy cotton slime and the aquatic angler slime, according to the developer.

The conservatory is your base. Its glass walls give you a view of Rainbow Island, and as you earn newbucks you can expand it with new areas and gadgets. Exploring the island beyond it reveals ancient technology and new resources.

Slimes are the stars, and the developer describes them as wiggling and jiggling. Much of the charm comes from simply watching a pen full of them.

The world is colourful rather than realistic, which keeps the tone light even when the weather turns or a slime gets boisterous, and nothing about it is gory or upsetting.

The bits of Slime Rancher 2 that are not quite calm

PEGI rates Slime Rancher 2 PEGI 3, but notes depictions of very mild violence in a child-like setting. Some slimes and weather conditions can damage the player, shown by a health bar; if it runs out, you are returned home. PEGI also describes the series as a shooter, because you fire slimes and food from your vacpack.

For that reason we have not ticked the no-combat flag. In practice the tone is cheerful and nothing is gory, but it is busier than most games in this library, and a ranch with many pens can feel like a lot to manage.

A calmer way to play is to treat the ranch as the main activity and explore the wider island only when you feel like it. The ranch itself is where most of the restful routine happens: feeding, collecting and arranging.

It is worth setting your own limit on how big your ranch grows. A smaller ranch is easier to look after in a short session and leaves more time for the most relaxing parts, such as discovering a new slime type or decorating the conservatory.

Editorial view: keep your ranch small at first and focus on one or two slime types.

Who Slime Rancher 2 suits best

Slime Rancher 2 suits players who like collecting and organising, and children who enjoy bright creatures and a bit of bustle. It is a single-player game with no online features listed on Steam.

If you want creature company with no health bar at all, Animal Crossing: New Horizons or Cozy Grove are gentler.

Younger players may need a hand at first, as the first-person view and vacpack controls take a little practice. Once those click, the game is very forgiving: running out of health simply returns you home.

Slime Rancher 2 release and platforms

The PEGI database lists Slime Rancher 2 on PC and Xbox Series X|S from September 2022 and PlayStation 5 from June 2024, all PEGI 3. Steam lists a release date of 23 September 2025, and the game is developed and published by Monomi Park.

The original Slime Rancher is also PEGI 3 and is listed on older consoles, but this page covers the sequel.

If you are new to the series, there is no need to play the first game before this one. The sequel stands on its own, with a new island and new slimes to discover.

Its bright colours and cheerful tone make it a good option for families who want something livelier than a puzzle game, as long as everyone is comfortable with the very mild knockabout PEGI describes.

"Calm" here is an editorial view of pacing and pressure, not a health claim. If a game stops feeling restful, it is fine to put it down.
