Stardew Valley
An open-ended farming life where you grow crops, raise animals, fish and get to know a small town at your own speed. It suits evenings when you want a gentle routine, though the mines add some light combat and an optional casino is the reason for its PEGI 12.
Slow seasons on an inherited farm

What a day on the farm in Stardew Valley actually involves
Stardew Valley starts with an overgrown plot. You inherit your grandfather's old farm, armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, and slowly work out how you want to spend each day. The official description calls it an "open-ended country-life RPG", and that open end is the point: there is no single route you must follow.
A typical day mixes small jobs. You water crops, tend animals, forage along the river, fish off the pier or chat to the townsfolk. Over time you unlock recipes, machines and new areas, and you level up five skills: farming, mining, combat, fishing and foraging.
For a calm evening, the useful thing is that almost every activity is optional. If fishing feels fiddly, you can ignore it for a season. If the mines feel tense, you can stay above ground and still make steady progress. The game rewards consistency more than speed, which suits short, regular sessions.
The parts of Stardew Valley that are less restful
It is worth knowing where the friction is before you start. Days in the valley pass on an in-game clock, so a session can feel like a gentle race to finish chores before the day ends. That rhythm can feel soothing or nagging, depending on your mood.
The mines and caverns contain monsters. PEGI describes the violence as mild and pixelated, with no sight of injury, but it is still combat, and mining is one of the game's five skills. You can postpone it and spend your days above ground instead.
The PEGI 12 rating comes from a casino area where you can bet in-game coins on games such as blackjack and slots. No real money is involved and you never need to visit it. Parents of younger players may still prefer to talk it through first. The game also lets you brew and drink beer, wine and mead, which PEGI notes as optional.
A gentle way to begin is to choose a small goal for each season, such as a single crop field or befriending one neighbour, rather than trying to do everything at once.
Playing Stardew Valley with family or friends
Stardew Valley supports online co-op for up to eight farmers on a shared farm, according to its official Steam listing, and some versions also offer split-screen. Players can share resources and work towards the same goals, and there is an option to make profits scale for a tougher experience.
For couples or families, co-op works well when everyone picks a role: one person tends crops while another fishes or decorates. Because it is cooperative, nobody loses, which keeps the mood relaxed. If you want ideas for low-key shared play, see our guide to calm co-op for couples and families.
Online play means chatting with whoever joins your farm, so it is sensible to keep sessions to people you know. Console parental controls on Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox can limit communication if a child is playing.
Where Stardew Valley sits in a calm library
Stardew Valley is one of the most widely available games in this library: it is listed on PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, iOS and Android. On the UK App Store and Google Play it is a one-off purchase, and PEGI lists no in-game purchases.
Because it has more systems than most cosy games, it is a better fit for longer, settled sessions than for a quick ten-minute break. If you want something with the same planting satisfaction but no combat at all, Garden Life or Botany Manor are gentler.
In our editorial view, it rewards a little restraint: set a session length before you start, and remember that nothing on the farm spoils if you leave it until tomorrow. Our wind-down routine guide has practical ideas for stopping points.
"Calm" here is an editorial view of pacing and pressure, not a health claim. If a game stops feeling restful, it is fine to put it down.
