Playing without pressure: notifications, streaks and daily rewards
Many games are calm while you play them and noisy when you don't: reminders, streak counters, daily gifts and limited-time offers all ask you to come back. This guide shows where to turn those signals down on consoles and phones, using the platforms' own support pages, and how to think about streaks so they stop feeling like obligations.

Three loops that pull you back: notifications, streaks and daily rewards
Most of the pressure in modern games comes from three overlapping systems:
- Notifications: pop-ups on your console or phone telling you a crop is ready, an event has started or a friend is online.
- Streaks: counters that reward consecutive days of play, sometimes resetting if you miss one.
- Daily rewards: gifts or bonuses for logging in each day, sometimes building to a larger reward at the end of a week or month.
None of these is harmful in itself, and many people enjoy them. The problem is when they decide when you play, rather than you. The sections below deal with each loop in turn: first the settings that quieten them, then a calmer way of thinking about them.
What PEGI's Pressure to Play label tells you before you start
PEGI, the age rating system used in the UK, announced new criteria in March 2026 that it began applying to newly submitted games in June 2026. Several of them cover exactly the systems this guide is about:
- Pressure to Play: this text descriptor appears when a game includes a play-by-appointment mechanic that offers periodic rewards for consistently revisiting it. PEGI says mechanics that only reward returning lead to a PEGI 7; if they punish you for not returning, for example by losing content or progress, the game becomes PEGI 12.
- Time-limited offers: purchases that are only available for a limited period or in limited quantities, creating a sense of urgency, lead to a PEGI 12.
- Unrestricted communication: where chat can't be blocked or muted and there is no moderation, the game is PEGI 18.
Because the criteria apply to new submissions, older games may not carry these descriptors even if they have similar features. When a calm game lists Pressure to Play, it is a useful hint to set up the notification and timer settings below before you begin.
Quietening notifications on PS5 and Xbox
PS5
For a quick, temporary silence, open the control centre, select Notifications and turn on Do Not Disturb. According to PlayStation's support page, pop-ups stay hidden until you log out, restart the console or turn Do Not Disturb off again.
For a lasting change, go to Settings > Notifications from the home screen. You can turn off Allow Pop-Up Notifications, and adjust Show Preview, Play Sound, Haptic Feedback and Display Time. You can also choose, per notification type, whether pop-ups are hidden while you are playing games, watching videos or broadcasting.
Xbox
Xbox's support pages explain that pop-up notifications, such as new messages or incoming calls, can be turned off or on, and that you can change which notifications appear, where on screen and for how long. System notification sounds can be muted separately. The exact menu wording can change with console updates, so the Xbox support page in our sources is the best reference for the current steps.
Turning down game alerts on iPhone and Android
Phone and tablet games are often the noisiest, because they can send notifications at any time of day.
iPhone and iPad
Open the Settings app, tap Notifications, choose the game under Notification Style and turn off Allow Notifications. If you would rather not lose them completely, Apple's Scheduled Summary groups notifications from chosen apps and delivers them at set times instead of as they arrive.
Android
Google's Android Help describes opening the Settings app, tapping Notifications and then App notifications, choosing the game, and turning its notifications on or off. You can also touch and hold a notification when it arrives and tap Settings to reach the same switch. Google notes that settings can vary by phone.
Many games also have their own notification menu inside the game's settings, which can switch off particular reminders while keeping others.
A play-time ceiling you don't have to police yourself
Platform time limits are designed for families, but they are useful to anyone who prefers a reminder to self-discipline.
- PlayStation: on a child account, a family manager can set a Playtime Duration and Playable Hours for every day or for particular days, choose Notify Only or Log Out for when playtime ends, and approve or decline requests for more time through the PlayStation Family app.
- Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2: the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app sets a daily play-time limit, shows an on-screen notification when time is up and can suspend software automatically. Nintendo warns that suspending can close some games without saving.
- Xbox: screen time limits are set from the Xbox Family Settings app or the web, not from the console, and the app can handle requests for extra time.
- Android: Digital Wellbeing App timers close a game when its daily time is used up; they reset at midnight.
- iPhone and iPad: Screen Time in the Settings app supports schedules and time allowances for apps.

Letting a streak go without feeling you have lost something
Streaks work because breaking one feels like a loss, even when the reward was small. A few reframes help:
- Check what you actually lose. In many games, missing a day only means a smaller bonus next time. If the game takes away content or progress, PEGI's new criteria treat that as a stronger pressure mechanic, which is useful context in itself.
- Decide your own rhythm. Three evenings a week is a perfectly good way to enjoy a game designed around daily visits.
- Remember the game will wait. In games that follow the real clock, such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, coming back after a gap is part of the experience. Weeds grow; you pull them up.
- Remove the counter from view. Turning off the notification that reminds you about the streak often removes most of the pull.
This is editorial advice, not a rule. If a daily habit genuinely brings you joy, keep it. The aim is simply for the habit to be your choice.
Side-stepping limited-time shop offers
Countdown timers on in-game shops are designed to make a decision feel urgent. If you play games with in-game purchases, a few calm habits make them easier to ignore:
- Keep shop notifications off, using the phone and console settings above.
- Set a monthly spending limit with the platform's family or account tools, even for your own account, if your platform offers one.
- Decide in advance what, if anything, you would pay for, and treat everything else as background.
- Prefer games without in-game purchases for evening play. PEGI's In-Game Purchases descriptor, shown on the rating, is a quick way to check.
Our calm game library lists in-game purchases and online chat under "worth knowing" for each game, so you can see them before choosing.
Small things to try tonight
- On PS5, use Do Not Disturb in the control centre for a quick, temporary silence.
- On iPhone, turn off Allow Notifications for a game, or move it into a Scheduled Summary.
- On Android, use Settings > Notifications > App notifications to switch off a game's alerts.
- Use platform time limits or Digital Wellbeing app timers as a reminder rather than relying on willpower.
- Check the PEGI descriptors for Pressure to Play and Time-limited offers before you start a new game.
Questions people ask
How do I stop game notifications on PS5?
Open the control centre, select Notifications and turn on Do Not Disturb for a temporary pause, or go to Settings > Notifications and turn off Allow Pop-Up Notifications for a lasting change.
Can I set a time limit on an Xbox from the console?
Xbox says screen time limits can't be managed from the console itself. They are set in the Xbox Family Settings app or on the web.
What does PEGI's Pressure to Play label mean?
It shows a game has a play-by-appointment mechanic offering periodic rewards for coming back. Reward-only mechanics lead to PEGI 7; mechanics that punish you for not returning lead to PEGI 12.
Will Nintendo's Suspend Software setting lose my progress?
It can. Nintendo notes that suspending software can cause some games to close without saving, so it is wise to save before the limit is reached.
